what is the desktop.ini file?

This is an odd behavior. I've noticed that on some systems this file appears on the desktop - don't know what triggers the appearance of the file.
i've noticed the following entry in them
[LocalizedFileNames]
Windows Media Player.lnk=@C:\WINDOWS\inf\unregmp2.exe,-4
can someone explain to me what the deal is with this file

The desktop.ini file is a special file that contains folder customisation infomation.

However in this case it seems to appear on systems that installed the beta version of Windows Media Player.

I saw some reports of this being linked to malware so you might want to follow the advice in to be on the safe side.
