My computer is working well right now. I have a PentIII 500 with no CD writer. I've heard that starting in the summer, there will be less support for win98 and I'm wondering what's the best way to back everything up, including the whole operating system? I have the disks from buying win98SE but then wouldn't have the various patches, etc. Should I get a CD writer? I've heard about a program called "drive image". What would people recommend for the home computer user who doesn't want to spend a lot of money and isn't very computer savvy?

Unless you are networked and can back up your drive that way I think you will have to get a CDRW drive. These have become fairly inexpensive over the past few months. (I've seen them for $80 if you get one that isn't top of the line.) If you want to back up everything including the OS then you will need a program like Drive Image by Powerquest or Norton Ghost by Symantec. There may be some freeware programs but I don't know any off the top of my head.
