We have 3 guys to watch over 17 nt servers and 3000 client pc's. We currently use Event Viewer and Performance Monitor to check for problems but nothing is in place to alert us when major problems occur. I've looked at HP OpenView ManageX and a few other automated event viewers but haven't found one I liked other than the ManageX. I'd appreciate any recommendations. I hope to try a few more before trying to convince my boss we need to spend some money!

we use snmp to monitor our network. Since our clients are widely spread (rather big WAN) it is nice to now when the hired connections (isdn/ATM) goes down. with snmp you can monitor practically anything. Most products (servers/switches/routers/print-servers and more) have support for snmp so a program that can make use of this is what I recommend. We use a program called SNMP-c.

Keep in mind though, that snmp must be properly set up, since it can be a big security hole perhaps the biggest security hole a network can have. [sig]
Nostradamus

[/sig]

You should be able to get any type of SNMP agent. What you need to do is activate SNMP on your servers and other devices using appropriate passwords and research the particular MIBS etc and traps and go from there. It is a bit involved, but once you get it setup and tuned, it will fly. [sig]
Mark C. I work with NT servers, NDS for NT as well.
Or you can hire an MSP. Loud Cloud and InteQ come to mind off the top of my head- usually you can subscribe to exactly the kind/level of monitoring you want, and the techical details are up to them to iron out. Relieves you of the need to acquire the expertise since the MSP handles all maintenance, updates etc. Might be a little extreme, but it's really a matter of time vs money and what you are hoping to obtain.
