All files have a series of bits (called flags or attributes) attached to them. Depending on the operating system, these flags tell the OS or users different things about the file. In Unix, DOS, Windows, etc, there is a flag that says that this particular file has been modified since that last backup. This is the Archive bit. If it is off, the file has not been modified. If it is on, the file has been modified. In Windows you can see this in the Explorer screen listed under "Attributes."
