What is Quark Passport? 1

Basically a multi-language version of QXP. Other countries use their 'native' version which contains native dictionary, h+j's etc... if you try to open these files without Passport, it aint gonna happen.
Also good if you want to send files in a single language to another country.

So it's a special version of Quark, rather than a plug-in?
Why doesn't quark just have this feature anyway? Do you have to pay more for Passport?

Not that I'm defending Quark...I think the app is great at its job and could do so much more...but hate the organisation...(if you can call it that).
One of the reasons Passport is a separate app because most countries have their own keyboard layouts...I mean...u ever seen a Japanese keyboard? They have 3 different alphabets...dependin on what 'kind' of Japanese you want to converse in...also, obviously the language and menu's of the application has to change.
One final thought...we all know how 'buggy' Quark has been in the past...myself...I'm glad they have a seperate app...can you imagine the problems they would have had if they would have incorporated it into one app?
That said...Quark is a dinosour...if it doesn't pull it finger(s) out...well...we all know our history.

I guess my main problem with Passport goes something like this:
A Norwegian customer using Norweigan QuarkXPress sends me a file. I open it in my QuarkXPress, get a message about unavailable H&Js etc, but the file opens. True, I don't understand the funny color names, and maybe some stuff has been shifted around, but I can work with it.
Another Norwegian customer using Passport sends me a file. I can't open it.
I just can't see the point. Surely there's a better way to integrate language support in QuarkXPress, like an XTension or an optional component. Or InDesign. The text in the menus and dialogs are only stored in resource files, so it's easily localized. H&Js might need their own logic, but there has to be a standard way of describing them for 'plugged-in' languages.
But yeah, I'm sure any practical solution will bring its own set of problems, no matter how easy it should be...

Guess what? A customer has just sent in a Passport file! Talk about fate - I hadn't received one in months!
I never knew about the 'single-language' option (although I've never used Passport, so I've an excuse). But my customer never heard of it either, so he's going to check it out.
"Oh, Passport. You'll have to send it using the single-language option..."
It sure made it sound like I knew what I was talking about. That alone has to be worth a star, cheers!

It's been a while since I used it myself. Think is was still Passport 4. But if i remember correctly...when the guy does a 'save as' there is either a drop down or tick box option that says 'single-language'. Basically what that does is save the file in plain old Quark. Obviously when you open it, it says something about document settings...just keep settings and off you go.
The only issue I had after that was unique cuts of fonts...but I think the Norwegien alphabet is the same as ours...except a few accents...so if they havent sent you fonts....you should be ok with your own version.
