It is simply a communications program. Windows comes with Hyperterminal which is also a comm program. Procomm (owned by Symantec now I think) is a better program that allows you to do much more than the freebie Hyperterminal.

Simply put...
It's a communications package that you can load on your laptop and talk to the phone switch. Much prettier, faster, and easier to use than a switch terminal. You can use it for scripted commands, use Windows style options like copy for command line input, etc.

the best thing about procomm is aspect scripting.. you can record or write scripts that automate any task. i use scripts everyday, dozens of times and anytime i have a project i write or modify scripts just for that project.. the 1st script i used that was a big time saver was on a big install to enter all of the npa's nxx's in 4 81's.. along with another script that entered 12,000 names in the switches.. all names and dn's came off of an excel, and ended up in 4 switches in ld 95.. running at 19.2 it took almost 4 hours.. it would have taken me maybe 60 hours and with the script every name was perfect..
