Hi,

I have an Intel server with 580 GB of disk space. I need to select RAID aray. There are many options, but I am only interesetd into RAID 5 array. I saw there are two options RAID 5 and RAID 5EE. If choosing RAID 5 there is 420 GB of disk space available. But if I choose RAID 5EE then only 280 GB of disk space is available.

What are differences between RAID 5 and RAID 5EE? What is RAID 5EE?

Thanks,
Grofaty

Hi,

I have found out what is RAID-5EE.

At IBM web page is question and answer:

An xSeries customer has implemented a ServeRAID Logical Drive using the new RAID-5EE level. What is unique about this RAID level compared to other supported RAID levels?

A hot spare drive is incorporated into the logical drive for the benefit of improved performance and availability.

I always recommend having a hot spair for your array. It gives that extra piece of mind that when a drive blows at 3am, by the time you get in to replace it at 4 or 5 (assuming you get a page right away) the array is almost done rebuilding.

What vendors server and/or raid card is it? I've never heard of raid 5EE to mean RAID 5 with a hot spare.

mrdenny, it is IBM Intel server. I was little confused with RAID-5EE. As I saw, IBM has tree possibilitys: RAID-5 without hot-spare, RAID-5 with hot spare and RAID-5EE.
Isn't that little confusing?

Yeah, that's definetly a little strange.
