I am reading another manual with procedures to upgrade a signaling server, and this keeps popping up: "COTS Server". I know POTS, but what is the "C" for?

Not true, Nortel's version of COTS consists mainly of the HP line of Servers customized for Nortel.

I went through this recently where I wanted to use my own server for a SS upgrade. I was told by Nortel that I need the buy the Nortel branded COTS server, which was made by HP.

It's still a particular MODEL of HP or IBM server. You don't have to BUY it from Nortel. All they require is THAT particular model with the particular hardware that they have blessed with their holy water.

Yea but if you don't and there is any problem they either won't talk to you or no matter what the problem is it is the non Nortel blessed server is the problem.

Who's getting the kickback?

That is because they only have the drivers to support that hardware speciffically installed in that server. There was a problem with the HP server a couple of months ago when they randomly changed the DVD drive to a different brand and it would not load.
