I have an ancient computer and the warranty is up in two weeks. The engineer has said if I pay for the graphics card he'll put it in for me,etc.

I have a IM845GL Motherboard with Intel Extreme Graphics. Can anyone recommend a suitable graphics card for £50 or less?

I have a Celeron processor and 512MB Ram which I will be upgrading soon when I find the right modules.

The most suitable and powerful card at this price point would be something like an ATI Radeon 9800PRO (note PRO)
It might have to be a refurb or 2nd user.
These guys are well established on ebay.

Also consider: depending on price:
ATI 9700PRO
ATI 9600XT
Nvidia FX5700ultra (note ultra)
Nvidia FX5900/5900XT/5900ultra

You should be able to find most of these second user for under £50 (the FX5900ultra and 9800PRO being the fastest)
These will all work on your Intel 845G chipset motherboard.

Unfortunately, the Intel 845GL chipset does not have an AGP slot. The 845G does, but the "GL" version was targeted for cheaper systems that only required a 400MHz FSB for the Celeron processor.

Therefore, you'll need a PCI (not PCI-Express) video card which will be better than your integrated graphics engine, but will not be anywhere near current cards today in terms of overall performance. You may want to consider a complete upgrade overhaul (new motherboard, CPU, RAM, and video card) at this point if your main concern is significantly increasing performance.

I stand corrected cdogg, thats a shame and certainly limits any decent options if that motherboard is retained.
