What good is digital output on anything and how and when would you use it?

As an example there are digital outputs on the back of newer CDROM's. Why is this?

Can you take this digital output and record a digital file like an MP3?

If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.

Alot of people are turning their pcs into home theater/multimedia centers. You could run the digital out into your rack stero or possibly even to your tv. I run a "video box" pc into a hdtv with surround sound, I am using the s-video cabling for dvds/divx/photo cds and run the cd audio out into the set for playing music cds/mp3.
