I've been curious as to the purpose of the estimate phase of the backup. What do I loose if I don't run it? My backups, except for the rare, on-demand ones, all run at night. We use amanda on some of our linux servers. With this programs there is an estimate phase for each DLE (an Arcserve session). After the estimates are done amanda uses the times to schedule the sequencing and parallelism of its runs. Does the arcserve estimate serve any other purpose than to update the progress bar?

Thanks,
- Joel

It adds entries to the activity log with the # of files, directories, and megabytes to be backed up, but certainly not needed.
