We are in the process of upgrading our branch office DC/file servers to Windows 2003. One of the benefits of doing so is VSS. I enable VSS on the user-data drive so that when they delete something (accidentally) I can show them how to use the "Previous Versions" client installed on their XP workstations to restore the file themselves. (Teach a man to fish, and all that good stuff).
What I have noticed is that the backups are a bit bigger now, presumabaly from backing up the VSS data "Shadow Copy Components".
So my question is, do I really need to continue doing incremental backups of the files themselves? Am I doing double the work by backing up the VSS data AND the changed files? If I just backup the Shadow Copy Components, can I restore the Shadow Copy Components and use the Previous Versions client to restore the files?
Thanks in Advance!
