what benefits will we gain with upgrading from GW5.5 to 6 or 6.5?

I would recommend upgrading from 5.5 to a more recent version. I performed the upgrade to GW6.0 a year ago and was happy with the added features. The 6.0 client looks nearly identical to the 5.5 client, but there are many end user and administrative additions to the 6.0 software.
I plan to upgrade to 6.5 tomorrow. The 6.5 client is completely new. I would say that there are more changes between 6.0 and 6.5 than the previous upgrade.
I'm not really going to get into the specifics of what is different between the different versions. There's plenty different and that information can be found on Novell's website. Some key points to consider:
Admins
GW5.5 is no longer supported by Novell. So if you got problems, to bad. Cross your fingers and hope a local partner can help because Novell won't help unless you are trying to fix a problem getting ready for an upgrade.
6.0/6.5 have a new mail restore feature that takes away the hassle of IT having to build a replica mail system to get that single email some C?O deleted and has to have back RIGHT NOW. You still restore the mail system directories, but you restore them in a special area, point GroupWise to this retore area and tell your user to use the client restore feature to get to it.
It is much much easier to move users between postoffices and domains now.
Users
Color coding emails, you can give a group of users their own color to highlight the email message for you.
Being able to change the goofy subject someone sent you to your own subject you can easily identify.
A much cleaner interface that can be made to look like Outlook (why, beats me, people just asked for it).
The ability to manage proxy rights, edit your signiture, and search your mailbox(6.5) from the WebAccess feature.
