Not a technical question just a curious question.

What are you guys doing about Windows 2000. I know some hardware suppliers are just suppling XP now. Are you all slowley migrating to XP or are you going to wait for others to burden the problems.

I need to buy some new Laptops but am considering going XP for the increased security. I am a little concerned about compatitbility issues.

I am just curious as to how other IT Managers are going about this

I would stick with Windows 2000. Provides all security you need and is stable.

I have had some problems with XP, network issues, and MSN Messenger in the OS.

I believe they came out with XP to be more appealing to the user, and broadband users.

Other thoughts??

Some of my feelings...

I've read in a few threads here about problems with XP networking although I have never had any bad experiences myself - In saying that I've had nothing but bad bad times with any wireless card based on the Prisim chip (Netgear, Linksys, Dlink etc.). Ended up going back to Win2K for wireless whick kinda beats the purpose of upgrading.

I don't know what exactly you meant by extra security except its got NTFS where Win98 doesn't.

In my experience so far I haven't had any compatability problems with 'normal' hardware - meaning some older stuff that worked in 2000 won't work with a clean install of XP.

If you're putting it on older boxes check the hardware compatability list but this usually isn't a problem for prebuilt units shipped with XP (although I always wipe them and install the corporate edition instead of wasting time with activation).

Thats about all I can think of at the moment for my input. Hope its worth something to you.

Cheers.

The reason for my question is that I have been told XP incorporates individual file encryption

I have also heard XP SE could be out next year shortly before Longhorn is releases

If you buy your PCs with XP Pro on them, you have the right to run W2K. This is the best way to do it, as you will own the XP licenses if you choose to upgrade later. This is the first time MS has provided downgrade rights on an OEM OS.
