I have a friend with a Toshiba M35X-S329 laptop. The DC socket is problematic and flakes out causing the laptop to run on battery unless you fiddle with the DC connection. He would like to replace the DC socket and I told him I'd help, but I'd like to know how involved the process is and where can I get a socket for this laptop, are they readily available in stores like Radio Shack? Any help is appreciated.

As you can see, quite an involved repair, full strip to mainboard then there is the de-soldering of the old broken socket.
I've started using a neat chassis plug instead but it still involves a total strip.

Martin, that's a nice neat socket. After soldering to the mobo, are you pushing the threaded body of the socket through the rear casing of the laptop, and then tightening the nut?

So far, I've been using some "square shaped" sockets which fit snugly to the pcb. On most occasions I've been able to wrap a piece of 18swg wire over the top of the socket, with either end pushed through earth plane holes in the pcb, and soldered. This gives it a little extra strength...

Indeed Roger, pushing the threaded body of the socket through the rear casing of the laptop from the inside and then tightening the nut, using three short 2-3cm lengths of wire soldered to what is left of the old plug or through the PCB if the legs come away cleanly.
I've found using this socket to be the easiest/neatest but above all, strongest repair because it takes the strain away from the solder joints on the PCB and once tightened is absolutely solid in the hole and looks really professional.
