What are .PDB files?

I've noticed that executables (either .dll or .exe) associated with Crystal tend to have accompanying files with a .pdb extension.

Can anyone elaborate on what PDB files are used for, and are they essential to Crystal?

I think that they are debug files created during the compile of Crystal.
