Hi,
I'm wanting to install a USB2 card in a Pentium 233 on a TX motherboard with 64mb SDRAM. The USB card has a VIA chip on it but when Windows (Win2000) starts installing drivers, it freezes. Could it be an incompatibilty issue?

PS Pls don't laugh. It is an old puter but still useful :)

Unfortunately we havn't had very much look with USB2 cards on older machines like yours (ours are also via) infact that's the only reason we stock a few of the older cards knowing of these incompatibility issues.
Usually when we fit ours, the PC's just fefuse to power up at all.

Thanks Martin,
Yes I found that if not going to work wouldn't even get to POST even on some P2 machines.
Its getting hard to even find a USB1 card
Thanks again.....

Might be the type of PCI slot you have in your older machines. PCI went through a couple revisions, like 2.0 or 2.1, I don't know them off the top of my head... It's a problem that can occur, might be what you're running into.

Hi dak...yes I seem to recall reading something recentl;y on that.

Oh well...back to USB 1. No probs.
Thanks guys

Ssshaker,
I've found more luck on AMD K6-2 systems with Via chipsets, but Pentium I and Pentium II systems are a longshot (particularly with the 440BX chipset). At the very least before you give up, you can try other PCI slots in hope to resolve any IRQ conflicts.

Also don't forget to flash to the latest BIOS revision for your board.
