Hi

On my Windows Vista Ultimate pc I frequently have very heavy disk activity without me doing anything at all. Does anyone have any suggestions on what this might depend on, and how I can get rid of it?

Regards

Windows Vista needs LOTS of RAM. If you don't have at least 2 gigs of ram you're going to see increased hard drive activity because it uses the hard drive as fake RAM.

Good luck

Could be scheduled activity such as disk defrag which by default goes off once a week around here. Watch task manager.

Hi

I have 3Gb of RAM, so that should not be a problem, thanks for the tip about task scheduler.

Regards

Is it Indexing, or Synchronizing, or Windows Updates, etc?

Have you checked for Malware?

The Task Manager (Process for all users checked) should show you something.

Doesn't Vista, by default, reorganize hard drives during system idle time? *That* would explain it.

Hi

I uninstalled oo defrag, and now the disk activity has reduced a lot. I think it was scheduled to defrag my disk at idle.

>I think...

To be sure Right Click Disk drive in 'Computer' - select Properties - select Tools tab - click Defragment now button. The resulting dialog details how the task is scheduled and lets you modify it.
