Is the connection to a HMC via WebSM secure by default? Or is there additional configuration required? ie: SSL etc....

No not by default!
You have to configure certificates and public private keys from the HMC

Thanks for the info! I figured that was the case, but was unable to verify this as I did not have immediate access to my HMC's.
I have printed & reviewd the instructions on how to enable secure WebSM.
