Running Windows 2000 with IIS as a web-server.

I noticed the problem when trying to open IIS administration - recieving an error message stating that it cannot connect to itself.

I checked the event logs, and found that the following errors were occuring on Windows start-up:

Service Metabase Path '/LM/W3SVC/' Cannot be Opened
Service Metabase Path '/LM/MSFTPSVC/' Cannot be Opened
Service Metabase Path '/LM/SMTPSVC/' Cannot be Opened

IIS tries to use the SMTP service when it first starts, and the Service Control Manager does not load properly in this instance - leaving an error code 7023 in the event log.

When I try to manually start the services, I am told that the folder cannot be found, and the services do not start.

I have had to take the sledgehammer approach, and am now rebuilding the PC - I would like to know if there is a less brutal way of solving this.

I have to add that the microsoft technet could not find any information on the event sources and ID's I had been given by the event log.

Thanks, Stuart

did you applied a SP3 from the local drive?
try to boot from w2k CD and choose Recovery OS.
run sfc.exe to find any errors
