Web Server Reports

Hello All

I have set up an access database on my hosted web server and created an ODBC Data Source called MLN Test How can I set it up so that users can run reports from that web server against the database stored on it? I cant seem to connect to it to run them from my local machine...ODBC does not allow me to specify anything but a local drive..

ODBC cannot connect to an Access Database that in not located on your local machine or in a LAN shared directory (i.e. Client For Microsoft Networks, Novell, etc...).

The only way you can get at the Access database is to run Crystal Reports from the web server. This involves having Crystal Reports installed on the web server.

If you are interested in remotely accessing data then the best solution I could imagine is a SQL server. It does provide access to its data and does not need to have file sharing involved. You can buy space on servers at most Web Providers.

If you're running Microsoft IIS as your Web server, you can install Crystal Web Services on top of IIS and build a small ASP (Active Server Pages) application to call and execute the reports. The reports would reside on the Web server and use the DSN on the Web server that points to the Access db.

There are examples on the Crystal web site that you can download as a zip file.

Hey thanks for the information.

I installed Crystal Reports 6.0 on my web server but it did not put any default page into the CRW directory....I will look for the download

I assume that I would have to create a USer DSN that points to my database on the server. How do I specify the DSN for the server in the reports?

I would definitely upgrade Crystal to V8. The Web services have been re-written. V7 was single-threaded, V8 is multi-threaded.

I don't use Access as a db, but I would create the same System DSN on the server as the one on your development PC where you created and tested the report. Brian Alves
