Hi all,

I have a laptop running Vista Home Premium. After connecting to a wireless network I can ping websites by IP address and URL (so not a DNS problem) however no browser (IE, Firefox, Safari) will display web pages; I just get the standard “page could not be displayed” message.

Ping and traceroute tests indicate the Internet connection is working okay; the problem affects multiple browsers, so it can’t be an application problem. Firewall is disabled, as is AV software.

If anyone can point me in the right direction for this problem I'd appreciate it!

Apologies if you know all this, applies to a 'normal' router assigned DNS address, network setup yours may be different but unlikely.

In IE (or the control panel) access Internet options.
In IE its tools/Internet options.
Select the Connections tab.
This tells IE how to connect,
If you are on a wireless network then your router probably assigns LAN address automatically, so there should be nothing in the dial up and virtual private network box.
Click the LAN settings button, there should be nothing selected on this tab either.

Next select network connections from start menu settings/network connections.
Find your network connection icon Wireless LAN connection or something like that. Right click and select properties.
Highlight the Internet protocol entry and click properties.
Obtain an IP address automatically should be checked.

If all this is OK look at IE security settings to make sure its not blocking everything, it could be a corrupt hosts file (blocking all), could be malware.

Thanks Steve, there's a couple of things in there I hadn't thought of. I'll check them out tonight!

Purple star for taking the time to reply. :)

Can your browsers connect from "Safe Mode with Networking"?

What are the Vista Network Diagnostics and Repair telling you?

Hi all,

Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately I'm still experiencing the same problem.

One other thing I have noticed is that if I try to access my router's admin pages at 192.168.1.1 these can't be displayed either, so the problem isn't limited to Internet pages.

Safe Mode with Networking allows me to connect to the wireless network but says "connected with limited access". Web pages still won't load. :(

If anyone has any other ideas I'd really appreciate it!

Cheers,

Solved it!

The laptop's owner had a previously removed (or so he thought) copy of Norton Internet Security. There was no sign of it on the Start menu, so I didn't spot it straight away. Norton's removal tool has solved the problem.

This leaves me with two questions:

1. If Norton can make an effective removal tool for their crapware why can't they make the uninstaller work??

2. Why is Norton Internet Security such a god-awful piece of cack?

Thanks to everyone for their time. Purple stars all round!

Probably a good place to ask your questions is Symantec, but more pointedly is the OEM's who keep pushing such software on unsuspecting new computer purchasers.

They were rhetorical questions. There is no good answer to them anyway. :)
