Web languages?

If you check out the Web Designers forum there have been a few long posts (you'll have to search for them) that compare several of the server-sie languages such as ASP, PHP, JSP, etc.

I have some Java Script, VBScript and ASP (not .net) experience and have been looking for jobs... most companies advertising jobs in my area seem to be looking for .net knowledgeable people.
You may want to do a little job ad searching on-line and see what you would be interested in, then pick up a book or 2 on the subject to see if it's something you'd really like to learn, then maybe a couple of classes to get into it a bit more?

According to NetCraft, the two most commonly-used server-side scripting languages are ASP (plain, not .Net) and PHP.
But I don't see why you should limit yourself to learning a language.

absolute answer goes back to learning all of them one step at a time. Developing on the web mostly takes into effect you needing to use what the resources dictact you to use.
that is one of the most powerful driving forces I believe in sleipnir214's post from NetCraft. ASP and PHP being the two dominant utlized technologies for the two dominant systems out there.
one thing to note, in order to learn "ASP" you need to learn etiher jscript, vbscript or some other language for scripting the pages. PHP is mush more straight forward.
IMO, I would learn Classic ASp prior to ASP.NET. there is still more need for Classic ASP developers as ASP.NET is still a newer platform and many servers have not been updated yet to support the .NET framework. Although if you're looking to find a job as a developer in a large company then there seems to be more availability of .NET developers lately.

Don't forget Perl. I know it's not quite as popular as other languages but is still very powerful and has its place.

Pick up the paper....goto the library and look back over the last 6months to a year. Look at the jobs out there. Check the employment web sites. Get an idea of the trends and what is most sought after and go with that.
