Web Based EDI Solution

We have heard a few pitches from these Web EDI guys and I still can't figure out why they are used. Maybe you can explain.
Q: What is the purpose of Web EDI? By definition it is not integrated into your business systems.
How is it any better than getting a fax or an email? In fact, since you have the added step of going to the Web site, wouldn't you rather get fax or an email?
Since there are integrated solutions for the same price as Web-based EDI, I would think those solutions would be more appealing.
