Is there a way to back up the mail using .pst files or does anyone know of a way to back it up besides with a tape.

The only way to properly back up the database is via a full backup using NTBACKUP or another Exchange aware backup program. The current version of Veritas BackupExec with the Exchange module can back up to a hard drive, as can NTBACKUP for Exchange 2000.

You put the administrative tools for Exchange 2000 on a 2000 Pro Workstation, which will upgrade the version of NTBACKUP on it to be Exchange aware. Then you can run NTBACKUP and have it backup the databases on the Exchange 5.5 server to a disk file.

If you just want to make PST files and don't care about getting a good database backup or deleting the EDB*.LOG transaction logs (which is one of the things that a full database backup does) then you can use EXMERGE.EXE. The version for Exchange 5.5 can be found at:

Good luck!
