This only matters if you have more than one site.
Example.
Site a
b
c Now If I'm on site "c" and happily installing SMS clients on the network, all is fine if we're all on the same serivce packs. but if site "A" puts a service ack on greater than "c" or "b", neither of those two will be able to make new sms clients see their site. While the clients search throught the site to find the one on their subnet, it also checks for versions, if it comes to "A" and its on version 4 then it will continue to look for version 4 everywhere else, if it doesn't find it, then no site will be located.!!!
Handy tip!!
