Want to associate a ftp name with my server

I am runnning a simple ftp server on my W2K serverbox with IIS 5.0

I have a registered domain name called <myname>.com but i would also like a ftp server called ftp.<myname>.com
for ease i would like to have my site called
ftp.<myname>/pub/music

do i have to register a ftp name called <whatever>/pub/music?

for instance ftp.cs.cornell.edu/pub/ is an actual site.
is this just a subdomain off the cornell.edu domain name

Sorry if i confuse anybody, just let me know what you dont understand and i'll clarify.

All you need to do is add an A record pointing ftp.<myname>.com to your IP address. Then, when clients log into the ftp server they would change directories to /pub/music. Or, make the /music directory the root ftp directory.

Do you have any documentation, or any links on how i could set up DNS? how would you recommend setting this up?

I would recommend using an external DNS service, like zoneedit.com. Its what I use for my 3 sites (my business site, my personal site, and a community site I run).

Just so you know, when you purchase a domain name such as yourname.com you get rights to add whatever you want in front of it such as foo.com can be ftp.foo.com and

http://www.foo.com.

The /public/music are just folders in your FTP site that you have allowed people to view. I noticed you already have a 2000 box running IIS. DNS is extremely easy to setup especially for one site and if your constantly connected with your server it wouldn't be hard to do it. I think working with an external DNS service may be better for you, but if you want to do your own DNS all you have to do is create a forward lookup zone called myname.com In that zone just add a host record for ftp and point it to the IP address of your FTP server. You also should remember that you have records probably with NetSol or someone like that. You would have to go there and change your records to point towards your new DNS server. These would be host records you would have to add as well such as ns.myname.com and ns2.myname.com and then you would point them to your DNS servers. If you really want an FTP with probably less hassle go with an external DNS service though.
