I have a server running Novell Netware 3.12 serving around 27 PC's that run on 3.11(!), 95, 98 and XP Pro.

We have recently purchased some software to monitor our REP Injection Moulding Machines on our shopfloor. An NT 4.0 Workstation PC acts as a server for the REP software.

Clients would like to access this data. REP inform me that this can be done through a network server.

Therefore, my question is:

Can I connect the NT 4.0 Workstation (REP Server) to the Novell Netware 3.12 Server using a standard CAT5 cable and then allow users who log onto the Novell server to access the REP Server and extract data and view the REP software.

I would only need about 4 PC's to act as clients and they will be running Win98 and or WinXP Pro.

My feeling are that this can't be done because we are, for example.....

using a Win XP Pro PC to log onto a Novell Netware 3.12 Server that is connected to a WinNT 4.0 Workstation PC and attempting to pull data from the NT 4.0 PC to the XP Pro PC via NN3.12.

Am I correct in thining this or can it be done?

Hi, CRML

Without knowing anything about the REPNet-Win software beyond what is on their website, it looks to me that is a Windows program which enables several production control workstations to monitor the moulding machines via a Windows network using a proprietary client/server program.

I would expect the NT4 machine in place might in fact act as the server, and there would be no role for the Netware server to play whatsoever. Beyond network topology considerations there should be no problem having the Netware network and the Windows network running over the same network.

If the REP software indeed requires a server separate from the NT4 box in place, then a Windows server would be required so it can run the REP server program. That program will not run on a Novall server. It is quite possible a separate server would be needed for performance reasons if the NT4 workstation machine is doing process control.

Client workstations having both the Novell client and the Windows client installed would be able to access both the Novell server and the Windows network and run the REP client software. The REP server component would run either on the NT4 workstation acting ss a peer to peer server (if supported) or on a separate Windows server.

That would be my guess, but you have to get the real poop from your REP rep (grin).
