Have read FAQ 779-1394 and the Reference after it.
3 machines W98 - 1 (new) XPHome ((Came that way))
1) Can Ping (successfully) all machines on the network with their IP address XP machine to other W98 Machines and Vice-Versa.
2)Cannot Ping by Computer Name!
Not Found

Yet W98 Machines all see eachother in the Network Neighborhood and all have the Name that I use to try to access them.

XP Machine cannot see any of the W98 Machines and W98 Machines cannot see the XP Machine.

Could someone shed some light on what I might be doing wrong and what I should do to correct it???

TIA So very Much - Need this to work by the 1st of the month.

iamdon,

I authored FAQ779-1394 and hoped it would help in situations like yours. I have a couple of ideas for you but if you have followed the FAQ I suspect you have already tried them.

For XP and 98 to "see" each other they must belong to the same workgroup. That workgroup name must be identical. Check workgroup name entries on all computers.
A workgroup name must not be the same as the computer name. A workgroup name can have as many as 15 characters, but it cannot contain any of the following: ; : " < > * + = \ | ? ,

Since you can ping by IP address TCP/IP seems to be working. Not being able to "ping computername" suggests to me to have you make sure to Enable NetBios over Tcp/IP on the Advanced TCP/IP Settings WINS Tab. ----

Thank you sir,
It was on the XP box that did not have the Use NetBios over TCP checked
once checked - all is great!

Thanks again, and again

Think I'll add that to my FAQ.

Thanks for posting back success. It helps others to know what works and what doesn't.

Same suggestion. Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP.
TCP/IP Properties > Advanced button > WINS (tab)
If already enabled:

Can you ping ipaddress?
Can you ping computername?
Are you running File and Print Sharing and Client for Microsoft Networks on XP?

On XP run from a command prompt: "browstat stat" and report back results. ----

it says its not an external or internal command. I must be messing that command up, and I have enabled the things above you mentioned.

my mistake it should read browstat status (not stat). sorry. try again.

What about the ping computername does it work? ----
