Well it had to happen, but received my 1st virus for almost 6 months (aren't I lucky).

Knew the file was questionable (to be frank, knew it was a virus) but tried to open anyway and Nortons kicked and and deleted immediately. So just to let you know, current virus definitions are working okay.

Lots of Symantec Live Updates this week. Underlying your note is that the reqularly "scheduled" live update service should be manually punched twice a day at least at the moment if your are a sucker for opening emails with attachements.

The real p.i.a. about email worms is that they usually use the IMAPI client of Windows and grab your address books for destinations. Thus you get an email from a source that you think you know and it should be safe.

Anyway, manually punch up Live Update or its equivalent for any AV software you are using that does email scanning.

As stated I'm upto date, really only posted as a warning to keep up to date. Never fallen foul of a virus and don't intend to.

Traced back the virus to a friends email in the states. They are now in the process of cleaning their computer and informing everyone in the address book.

Still find it amazing in todays enviroment that not everyone has a virus program auto detecting, and given the proliferation of broadband, still people do not have or not even aware of firewalls.

I agree with you, it is amazing how many people do not have virus protection or even a firewall installed on broadband.

I work in the field and the amount of people I ask what antivirus they have and they do not have a clue astounds me.

OK it keeps me in business but you would expect that the BB suppliers would offer these free of charge, especially as a good forewall can be downloaded free from internet.

This is why these viruses get around so quickly most end users have no idea what they are doing.

When I had my broadband, I had already install a firewall in preperation for the installation and amazingly the engineer did give that advise.

A friend of mine also works for a uk broadband supplier and all the do is install the cable modem and you then attached a patch lead (which they supplier) and inform them that you are up and working.

As they had a number of complaint from people claiming their engineers had damaged their pc as such like, they also no longer install NIC card where required.

I can only place the blame at ISP's who are not doing enough to counteract these problems. Unfortunately, the majority of home users are not technical in the least and most have problems just sending emails let alone knowing about security issues. It has now been a uk government policy for the continued rollout of broadband around the country, but no such enthasis is ever placed on keeping these connections secure.

Although it might make people choose not to install BB, it is my opinion that they should at least make a further charge on install for the supply of such items, or give demo software which is limited to 30days use. It would then be upto the user to continue or not in a safe enviroment. Should they fail to do so, they would only have themselves to blame.
