I would make a backup of your system first - a FULL, COMPLETE backup. Whenever you do such a procedure, it's foolish not to have one.
I have done it a couple of times without issue, but when it was first released I saw several posts in various places with people telling of problems. So while it SHOULD be safe, there COULD be a problem.
Yes you can but be sure to follow the documentation on the sequence of applying service packs and updates. Here is some great information from Susan Bradley's blog
