We have two similar servers running NT4 SP6a, NTFS file systems. We are having an ‘slow access’ problem using W2K clients accessing files on one of the servers. Problem is most obvious when using Windows Explorer to open up large folders (500 – 1000 objects) on the server in question. Most of the time it takes long enough the ‘ole flashlite’ to appear before the screen finally paints the sub-dir contents. Clicking on a folder in the just opened directory results in another wait (and flashlite)! The crazy part is we didn’t have a problem when Win95 workstations were used. We setup the following test using a Pentium 120 Win95 and P3-500 W2K workstation against the three servers (the 2 NT4 boxes and a third running W2K Server) All 3 servers were setup up with identical test sub-dirs containing 1465 objects.

The timing was from a click on the folder until the list was displayed in Explorer. Times are in seconds.
As you can see the timings were using a stopwatch, so we are not splitting milliseconds here. The access time on Server 3 are really out there for the W2K workstation, but the time using a Win 95 workstation is uniform across all 3 servers.
We are guessing there must be a setup problem on the Server 3 that is only affecting a W2K client. Has anybody seen anything like this? Any help would sure be appreciated.
