We have two similar servers running NT4 SP6a, NTFS file systems. We are having an ‘slow access’ problem using W2K clients accessing files on one of the servers. Problem is most obvious when using Windows Explorer to open up large folders (500 – 1000 objects) on the server in question. Most of the time it takes long enough the ‘ole flashlite’ to appear before the screen finally paints the sub-dir contents. Clicking on a folder in the just opened directory results in another wait (and flashlite)! The crazy part is we didn’t have a problem when Win95 workstations were used. We setup the following test using a Pentium 120 Win95 and P3-500 W2K workstation against the three servers (the 2 NT4 boxes and a third running W2K Server) All 3 servers were setup up with identical test sub-dirs containing 1465 objects.

Server1 (W2K) Server2 (NT4) Server3 (NT4)

P120 Win95 3 3 3

P3-500 W2K 1 1 8

The timing was from a click on the folder until the list was displayed in Explorer. Times are in seconds.
As you can see the timings were using a stopwatch, so we are not splitting milliseconds here. The access time on Server 3 are really out there for the W2K workstation, but the time using a Win 95 workstation is uniform across all 3 servers.

We are guessing there must be a setup problem on the Server 3 that is only affecting a W2K client. Has anybody seen anything like this? Any help would sure be appreciated.

Are all the servers the same as far as 1) domain membership, 2) protocols running 3) entries in WINS and DNS? One thing I can think of is that the gyrations one has to endure to get permissions on certain things are more complex in Win2K. Are the inherited folder permissions unique on one of the two NT servers? If you turned all five systems off, then booted them all up, and retried your test, would your results be exactly the same?

Win2k defaults to DNS vs. WINS name resolution. If DNS is not running (and it often is not used on NT4 domains) it will definitely slow down the name resolution process. Also check the time required to actually copy a file of >30MB to see how the network performs once name resolution is completed. This will tell you whether there are other issues like protocols or routing involved.

Thanks for the replies. Will pass these on to our network people and see it applies to our situation. Thanks again.
