I did not build and configure the server, I have inherited a problem whereby a server will not boot. The server config is a RAID 5 stripped set across 3 disks, disk 1 having failed. When attempting to boot the server gets 75% of the way through the W2k startup screen with the moving task bar at the bottom and goes no further. I am awaiting delivery of a replacement drive but thought I would pick a few brains.
I thought the server would boot with just 2 disks in a RAID 5 config (its a while since I have dealt with RAID) The RAID config is a adaptec SCSI 2100 card with 3 disks. The first disk has reported as 'failed' however as stated I still thought the machine would boot?
It would appear that someone has potentially changed the SCSI card for an alternative, tried to boot and then changed back once again to the original config, could this have any impact? Could 'cached' memory have the incorrect driver stored (but saying that the OS starts to boot suggesting that the Hardware level is ok)
Will changing the SCSI card and trying to boot with a failed disk, changing back to the original config and trying to boot create problems?
Any suggestions and/or experience hands ideas appreciated.
Cheers
