Hello, I am about to introduce W2003 servers to a W2K server domain. I know that if i want to make a W2003 server a domain controler(Active Directory) i need to run the domain preparation tool. Apart from a system state backup on the W2K DC is there anything else i should do? My fear is that i will run the tool and everything will screw up.

What should I look out for and what is the safest way to upgrade the AD schema on the W2K DC?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks
BigTM.

If you have a spare DC online, I would suggest taking it offline before you do anything. This way you have a working copy of your directory before you start. You could restore it easily that way if something went wrong.

Watch out for mangled attributes

You are essentially upgrading to Active Directory 2003. To do this, I would strongly recommend reviewing the links below:

Quote from the top of this article: "Several glossy Microsoft presenters have stated that all you need to do to complete a Windows 2003 Domain upgrade is run ADPREP and then upgrade away. This may work for very small / simple environments but it is definitely not good advice for most companies. After upgrading five servers in two unrelated domains and installing many fresh copies of 2003 I can say that I personally would not skip a single step in the process I have developed below."
