Using Veritas 9.1 Rev 4691 on a windows 2000 server
Just installed a Quantum vs160 tape drive to replace an older internal tape unit.
Quantum unit appears to be working fine.
I have run backups successfully, some of the time. For example, I ran a backup Tuesday night that went to a 111,825,941,426 byte count which fit on one tape.
Thursday nights job apparently 112Gb+ byte count apparently is requiring 2 tapes. Which is a problem since no one is here when it requests the second tape.
I was told that the vs160 would hold 160G. When I set up the tapes and selected the media types, I have to choose SDLT1(1800ft,110GB) since VS160 doesnot show up. I am assuming that this is the problem. I think the SDLT1 can only fit 110GB, true?
Does anyone know if there is a patch/update that will add the vs160 to the media types.
Thanks.
Steve

There is nothing wrong. Your tape are rated 80 gb native and 160 compressed. Rule of thumb is half the difference...so 120gig on a tape would be considered very good compression. You getting 112mb which means compression is working. All depending on what file you back up and if they are already compress the drive wont compress them any further. The setting to change the type of media has no bearing on what the drives compression will be.

I was hoping to get 112GB on one tape.
Guess I'm gonna be stuck with a 2 tape nightly backup that is 112GB that won't won't complete until I get in at 9:00 every morning to put in a new tape for it to write to.
:-/
Thanks for the info.
