I'm definitely a newbie at VPN's. I have a netgear FVS318 VPN router and I'm trying to set up a VPN with window's XP. I've logged into the router and set up some of the settings, but I need some help with some. I understand some of IPSEC, but I was wondering what a "local IPSEC identifier" and a "remote IPSEC identifier" would be. Can it just be any name, or is it like a dynamic dns website?

In NetGear-speak, the IPSec Identifiers are the IP addresses (or FQDN's) at each end.
Like most of us, you probably don't have a fixed IP, so I'd recommend setting up a dynamic DNS address for at least the location of the FVS. Personally, I did it for both ends, but you can enter 0.0.0.0 for the remote end. I don't think that's too secure though, since that setting allows connection attempts from any IP address.

Getting the XP client to talk to the fvs318 has had many people tearing their hair out! Good luck!

Thank you very much shaferbus, that was very helpful!
