vpn problem with my isp

Let me preface this question with the fact that I will be very glad if someone can help me find an answer

I have windows xp home edition and a digital cable (ROADRUNNER) internet connection, I also have MCaffe virus scan and firewall. All of the proper VPN apps have unrestricted access in the firewall so I dont think there is a problem there

I am trying to get on to the vpn where I work, I seem to get connected fine, get the login window fine and sign on ok but after being signed on for about 30 seconds I am notified that I lose my ISP's dns server, I still see packets being received but I dont seem to be able to get anywhere on the network at work...(Im trying to use timbuktu for remote acesss if that helps)..any ideas

First, I would be very surprised if your ISP is your problem. RoadRunner is generally very VPN friendly, although part of the admin is handled on a regional basis, so that could vary.

First thing that would come to mind, there is a known problem with XP SP1 and ICS working with VPN. See

Not sure that applies as I would expect your connection to die completely. Doesn't sound like it is.

I think you have multiple problems going here, not enough information to be sure. First, clarify. Your VPN connection does stay active, correct?

Losing the ISP DNS server is most likely a result of having all traffic routed across the VPN without having a route back to the internet. Troubleshooting from there depends upon your configuration, so more questions.

What kind of server is being used at your work? What kind of internet connection there?

What kind of connection are you using on your home computer (the built in client, a Microsoft client installed by an .exe file, or a third party client)? Be as specific as you can. Any intenet connection sharing going on there -- either ICS running on your computer or a NAT router?

The vpn client I am using is cisco systems 3.6.2. I notice in the status window that the packets recieved and discarded are almost keeping pace with each other. In the network column one address is 0.0.0.0...this shows activity...the other network listed which I assume is my work shows no activity.

There is nothing on my pc except for the cable modem installed by the RR people

When I try to remote connect with timbuktu it says the remote machine may not be running it or the address may be incorrect..Our IT people jsut gave me this toi try a few days ago and they seem to be baffeld with the problem...they want me to take my pc to work so they can wipe the drive and install win2k

As far as what servers are at work I will have to ask IT.

The VPN client would indicate that there is a Cisco VPN server on the other side. Not something that I deal with, there are a lot of Cisco specific problems that I am not real familiar with.

What I do know . . . loosing connection to your ISP DNS is a result of an option to force all traffic over the VPN. This is configured when the IT peeps compile the actual client package that you are given. They will have to change this, either by not forcing all traffic across the VPN or providing a return route to the internet from their end.

You might get a bite here if you start a new thread and mention the Cisco client in your subject.

You might also want to search / browse / post in forum557 Again, the Cisco stuff is has it's own specific issues that really can't be dealt with without knowlege of the Cisco hardware and software.
