hi everyone

I can't get remote access from a WinXP machine to our office server.

here's my setup:
dsl - dlink di604 - win2k server ( modem, and 2 nics )

In the router I have set it to be 192.168.0.10, then DHCP the office LAN machines from 192.168.0.11 up to ..70
the server has NIC #1 fixed at 192.168.0.1 and NIC #2 is 192.168.0.5

the server has a modem for PC Anywhere access for tech support of our POS software, first NIC is for the network of client machines at the office, second NIC is for the VPN. Both NIC's have fixed IP's and are connected to the DI-604.

I have gone thru the VPN setup on the server, and selected the 2nd NIC for VPN, forwarded VPN in the router to that NIC's IP, set the firewall in the router to allow VPN.

When I look in network connections on the server, the "inbound connections" setup points to the modem, which I assume is for PC Anywhere. Both NIC's are listed and have the IP's set correctly.

To me it seems that the server is not expecting inbound connections on the 2nd NIC, .... perhaps this is why I can't connect ? The error I get from the remote machine:

" error 800, cant connect to the machine, unable to establish a connection...."

thanks for taking the time to read this....... any help greatly appreciated!

I am not sure why you need two NICs that will confuse your system. Regarding error 800, have you forward the ports to 192.168.0.5?

hi, thanks for the reply...

I installed the second nic to get around the " you are selecting the last available connection, bla bla... " in the RAS wizard. It seems to want to dedicate the nic I choose to VPN only and disables the internet access if I choose the first nic.

After installing the second nic, I can choose it for the VPN, in the RAS wizard, but in my network connections folder the inbound connections Icon lists the modem as the device selected, not showing the second nic at all.

I have forwarded the port in the router, and set the firewall to pass VPN.

I have noticed some other odd behaviour while testing also.. it seems if I enable the 2nd nic, the POS software on our LAN gets confused and cant login. I believe the client machines start a telnet session at login, then run a console for the program. The program is hard set to use 192.168.0.1 as the IP of the server, which is the IP I have fixed to nic #1. This is why I have set the router to 192.168.0.10 , and DHCP issuing IP's from there up.

I can't seem to ping the second nic either from inside the LAN, but can pin all others. Perhaps this is as simple as an issue with the 2nd nic no tplaying nice? Would the RAS wizard have somehow made this nic uanvailable?

Thanks!
