O.K. I have a definity G3r that was upgraded to multivantage 1.2 last May. I have been asked what it will take to start utilizing VOIP ( what additional Equipment we will need ). We have a cisco gigabit network and I do have a CLAN card installed I administer thru. Hope this makes sense I was thrown into this job and all I know is what I have learned on my own. VOIP is over my head. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You will need a TN2302 IP Media Processor card to get IP phones working. I was quoted $6000 for one. They also hit you for $100(ish) for right to use licenses for each phone.

Groundrat, I know you say you already have a Cisco network but what are you looking at VoIP for - inter office comms? If so, can I suggest you check out the Quintum VoIP hardware. It's easy to set up (no additional PABX hardware) and best of all, has a neat "fail over" feature when the IP circuits degrade it switches to PSTN. If you're wondering, no I don't work for them, just had some experience with them

I say stick with the AVAYA VoIP way, that way you won't have any integration issues..

Hey Ground...I'm with you. I'm learning as i go. I am actually piloting an Avaya S8300 switch and it works pretty good.

I think you need to have some meetings with your network guys and look over the network enviorment. There is allot of VLAN segmenting and QOS policies that have to go in place for VIOP to work properly. Do you have an S8300 processor on your G3R now or are you still on the conventional legacy processor. I have 3 G3R's that I manage.

We have had an admin change and the new Prez wants to start utilizing the switch for video conferences and start using VOIP in some areas. They are looking to use the switch's full potential. I have a clan installed that I administer thru the network. We have 5 ip phone RTU's from the upgrade and that is what they want to try. I guess my question is if we install a TN2302 IP Media Processor card does the switch use our existing network thru the CLAN card for VOIP? and is that the only equipment we need? Thanks for all responses.

Yes a CLAN a Medpro and the RTU is all that is needed to get going.
