I am using VMware Workstation 4.5.1 to run a copy of Win XP Pro on my Fedora Core 1 box. The problem is that it often freezes up when I start XP. (I can usually telnet into the box and kill the process though.) When I first installed VMware it said that it needed a vmon modules which wasn't loaded into my kernel, and then asked if I would like it to compile the module for me. However, it gave a warning that my kernel was built with an earilier version of GCC than what was installed on my box. I'm pretty sure that this is what is causing the problem.

My kernel is version 2.4.22-1.2188.nptlsmp. Where could I find a version of the vmon module compiled with the same version of GCC as this kernel?

I have also just downloaded FC2, which has recently come out. I am planning to upgrade my system to it. I believe it uses the 2.6 kernel, which might have been compiled with the newer version of GCC. I'll see how this works out.

I've used VMware 4.5.1 on both FC1 & FC2 with the same kernel/gcc warning but was still able to run Win2k/XP without problems.

During the compilation of VMware's kernel modules, did you notice any errors? A friend of mine tried for 3 days only to realize that he didn't have gcc installed!
