Been doing a lot of reading about BIND and I'm starting to talk myself into circles.

We have local Domain Controller (Windows) with proper domain configurations and naming, etc.

I have a local DEC-Alpha and it needs to know the computer names in the company. Many of the computers in the company are configured with DHCP.

The Alpha has to run if the local Domain Controller is down so, I assume I need to configure a BIND server on the Alpha so it will keep recent database of computer names/addresses in the company and it will get refreshed from the DC on a regular basis.

Here is where I get confused. Do I configure the Alpha as a BIND server and make it a SLAVE to the DC server? Do I then point the Alpha to itself for DNS resolution?

1) you could get a another dns server (should have 2 anyway)

and point to both.

2)you could just run the alpha server as a secondary and point to itself, after making it a secondary

I'd go with #1.
