I have been having fatal exception errors and when I go to my troubleshooting info on my computer, it tells me that I need to repair vxd files which some of which are missing etc and I being a novice with computers are a bit confused - can anyone point me in the right direction and show me step by step in lay mans terms what needs to be done.....

What is the exact text of the error messages?

ski ,
it is these and some more which I do not have written down anywhere......

A fatal exception OE has occurred at 0028:C002800 in VXD VMM(01)+ 000001800.

- A fatal exception OE has occurred at 0028:C027:E00400 in VXD VMM(06)+ 000003004.

- A fatal exception OE has occurred at 0028:C027:E00E in VXD VMM(06)+ 00000300E

First step I would suggest is run SFC 9system file Check)

Start > Run > SFC

This will check if the system files are corrupted. It will aslo give you the opportunity to install a replacement version.

If SFC shows there are no corrupt files, then run the computer in Safe mode.
If the messages continue there, then the cause may due to a hardware problem, like bad memory or a bad MB.
Swapping out is the only way to find the culprit.

If the messages do not appear in Safe mode, then the cause may be due to a software problem, like a driver conflict, etc.
To troubleshoot this, do a clean boot:

Win 95 ->
Win 98 ->
Win ME ->
Win 2000 ->
Win XP ->

I ran SFC last night and it took awhile. I found a few exe files they say may be corrupt. Should I download them from my original CD? I still see mey errors,so I guess I should run the celan backup - how hard is it for a novice computer person?

If the original versions of the corrupt files are on the CD, then you can pluck them off it using SFC.

A clean boot(not a backup) is very easy to perform.
Just follow the instructions in one of the links in my last post for your O/S.
It's just a stripped down version of a normal boot in which certain files are not loaded.
If the system runs ok with a clean boot, then one(or more) of the unloaded files is the cause of the problem, and subsequently loading these files one by one will find the culprit by process of elimination.

What OS?????.........What System???.........How old???.......and BIOS?........

The thing I know about the VMM32 folder is that whatever is in it, gets read in place of/overrides the entries in your VMM32.VXD file in the System Folder......which is a compilation of System "specific" drivers such as...

*biosxlat *parity *reboot *vcache *vcd *vcomm *vcond *vdd
*vdef *vfat *vfbackup *vflatd *configmg *dynapage *ebios *enable *ifsmgr *int13 *ios *vkd *vmcpd *vmouse *vmpoll *vpd
*vsd *vtdapi *vwin32 *vxdldr

otherwise Config.sys and autoexec.bat would be bloated.....
which used to get loaded in the [386enh] section of System.ini....
I have some of these entries in System.ini and they may be there for backwards compatibility....

Are you runnin' 95........?

Yes, definitely do a clean boot if the system runs ok in Safe mode.
To get into Safe mode, hold down the Ctrl key during startup, select Safe mode from the startup menu using the KB arrow keys, and press Enter.

Cougarfan,
Have you deleted any progs recently?
Tiger.

It could also be of importance to know...
1) how old is this pc?
2) what's the date of bios on BIOS startup screen at boot....?
30 how long have you been running win98 "without" these error messages?

) how old is this pc? -- 1998
2) what's the date of bios on BIOS startup screen at boot....? not sure - will have to look
30 how long have you been running win98 "without" these error messages? about 4.5 years

I may have deleted them with programs but have tried to re install the programs and all, and it doesn't fix it...

This is useful info.....I would get an up to date virus scanning program and scan....I would suggest reading this to compliment your virus scanning knowledge...
and more knowledge here;
even if this is not causing the problem....
Here's a great little free AntiVirus program if you need one; After a complete virus scan....
Do you have original System OS CD's...?(ie win98, restore disc which came with PC...?) I would seriously consider re-installing your Orig Vmm32.vxd file from SysFileChecker as noted in my first post...
Check and see if you're runnung in MsDos Compatability mode by--right click My Computer>choose properties> click on Performance tab.....You'll see it there right away if this is the case...
