I have a question that I can't find the answer to yet (still searching). We have a 2950 and one of the guys troubleshooting tells us that the problems occuring on the switch (defined as wierd connectivity problems) were caused because Vlan 1 was disabled.

Now I can't remember exactly but I am pretty sure that Vlan 1 should never be disabled or 'bad' things can happen.

Also it was mentioned that Vlan 1 is the only Vlan on the switch.

So can someone expand on my memory here and explain the why's associated to this? Also would the switch even work if it's only vlan was disabled?

without seeing the config it's hard to say .Out of the box everything is in vlan 1 and the switch will work ok . No way of knowing if anything has been changed without seeing the config. It doesn't matter what vlan you put the ports in . You can't disable the layer2 vlan 1 from the config it is default. If he is talking about the layer 3 SVI config , that is strictly for manageing the switch and would have no impact on users . First palce to start is with the speed /duplex settings of both the switch and client nics . If you set the switch ports to "auto" for speed and duplex then the clients "must" also be "auto . Whether the ports are in vlan 1 or vlan 33 doesn't really matter unless you are trunking down to the 2950 .
