I recently installed Microsoft Visual C++ version 6.0 Standard Edition on my main system, which is an Intel Celeron 1.7, 512 MB RAM, 80 GB HD and Win XP Professional. The main problem is that the compile/link function ("build") doesn't work consistently. It sometimes locks up during linking a project, and System Manager is the only way to get out (clicking "Stop Build" won't do anything). On a hunch, I installed the same Visual C++ software on another system w/ Win Me, and apparently there is no problem with the same project.

Another more minor problem is that the Group Box Properties window won't come up (although I can get around that with the Alt-Enter keys). This also is no problem on the Me system.

So I would conclude that Visual C++ 6.0 has problems with XP? There is a recent SP6 for Visual C, but it's huge (62305 KB), so I'd rather get some idea if it'll fix this first.

Or maybe MS wants us all to buy the .Net version???

I don't know of any specific problems running C++ on windows XP. It is deffinatly supported on XP.

You can take a look at for details on which bugs SP6 fixes for C++.

You could also try running the Software in the Windows 95 compatability layer.
