Hi everyone
My father in law has a little problem. He has windows vista installed on a new laptop and windows xp sp 2 on a desktop in his study. The workstation is cabled to a wireless Netgear router DG834G.

Now he can connect to the wirless router for broadband access from his laptop but he cannot see the xp machine through Network. Any ideas why he cannot see the other machine from each machine. Really strange I have done some googling and it looks like NTVLM versions are different on vista and xp but I was wondering if anyone has futher details to get this working. We would idealy like to be able to see each machine to transfer files and the printer thatis connected to the desktop.

The first thing I would check is the Workgroup. If the workgroup is not the same you won't be able to see them.

I had issues with sharing as well - though it was only with trying to access the files on the Vista machine from an XP machine. It appeared to me that Vista could easily access the XP shared files.

If you want to view/copy the files from Vista to XP you need to make sure either Public Folder Sharing is active and you've placed the files in that folder - or share the files themselves (which you couldn't do in previous versions) and make sure Everyone has access, and that Password Protected Sharing is off.

Tried the simple stuff like a ping test?

Right smah - I seem to forget that whenever I tell people. I'll rephrase:

If the workgroup is not the same you won't be able to see them easily.
