Hi,

I have got a refurbished dell studio laptop which had vista preloaded onto it. The problem is that its doesn't shut down. That is it shut downs completely and then in 2-3 seconds restarts on its own. Similarly, it doesn't go into the sleep mode as well. As soon as I down the lid, the laptop restarts. I have tried all the things that I could find on the internet (first few hits), but nothing has worked till now. If anyone knows a solution for this, can you please let me know.
Thanks,
Kam

Is there any Bios Update available for this machine? Have you tried setting the Bios to the Safe Default setting?

Does removing the battery, and then holding the Power Button down for a Minute, before putting the battery back, help?

Have you looked at this old XP "manual" in case it offers any clues?

WINDOWS XP SHUTDOWN & RESTART TROUBLESHOOTING

What "Wake On" Events might this machine have set? This XP Thread will give you some things to look for.

In addition to linney's links, test with any external devices disconnected (like printers, scanners, keyboards, mice).

Hi,

Many thanks for your replies.
I have followed all the steps that "linney" had mentioned. Also I did follow the steps mentioned in 'WINDOWS XP SHUTDOWN & RESTART TROUBLESHOOTING' and it didn't help either. I have called the Dell Technician and they are now reformatting the drive and reinstalling vista and all the drivers. Lets see if that helps.

I will keep you all posted with the updates.
