Ok, Vista will pop up and say that updates have been applied and needs to restart, I postpone the update for say 4 hours and then 30 mins later shut my laptop down. Vista then restarts the machine so it can finialise the install of the update. I find this very annoying, if I want to shut my laptop down there is a reason for this and I do not want it to restart, anyone else had this????

You might find some useful suggestions in this old XP article.

XP Home auto restart after updates
thread779-1399261

Have a look at the configuration of your update settings in the first place, have a look at what is available via Group Policy for Windows Updates, and there is also mention of a Registry fix you could try if the first two suggestions do not solve it for you.

hmmmmm, I don't think it's anything in that thread or link. Vista auto restarting after applying updates I can understand, and my understanding of the restart manager means that Vista will put everything 'back in place' as it were, so if you had Outlook open Vista would re-open outlook after restarting.
This is a bit different; Vista installs updates and tells me it will restart it 4 minutes or so,
I postpone the restart for a period of time (options are 5 mins, 10 mins, 1 hour, 2 hours and 4 hours I think)
Then I finish what I'm doing and decide to pop to the pub so I choose shutdown (as in shutdown and power off I'm going to the pub!!!!)
Vista now restarts instead of shutting down to finish of the update installation.
Then when its finished it leaves Vista at the login screen

My auto update settings are set at install updates automatically everyday at 03:00

This is vista ultimate, just on a standalone laptop, no domain involved.

If there is no policy settings for this at

Local Computer Policy
Computer Configuration
Administrative Templates
Windows Components
Windows Update

then these posts recommend disabling the Windows Updates Service prior to shutting down as a sort of workaround.

How to disable restart after installing automatic updates in Windows Vista

Windows Vista Tips: How to Disable Automatic Reboot in Vista after update

Personally I set Windows to notify but not to download anything until I'm ready for it so I don't have the problem that you do.

Nice one, cheers linney.

I'll check that policy setting later and if not just stop the service.
