I have a Lenovo laptop with Vista where the device support appears to have gone south - nothing shows in device manager and several devices are no longer working. I wanted to do a repair install, but this only supports resetting everything on C: drive to factory level. I then hoped I could use the Transfer Files and Settings to save the original system configuration to another system in a shared folder, which I did successfully, reset the C: drive to the initial install level, which I did successfully, and then restore the files and settings using the transfer utility again, accessing the shared folder where the original settings are saved. It does not allow that (XP used to allow that option). The saved folder content appears to be setup to allow it to be copied to a CD/DVD and then transferred from that, but there is > 20GB worth of data - too large for a single DVD. If I could figure out how to get the Transfer utility to accept the input from either a shared folder, or a local folder, I think this would work - but I cannot find any such option.
I have an image of the original C: drive, so can restore that easily. I don't have any ideas of how I might be able to save all the settings, restore the system, and then restore the settings with this system. Does anyone have any suggestions? thanks,
