I am having an issue running Microsoft Vista Home Premium SP1 with 4GB RAM on a Dell Inspiron 1526 laptop. It ran fine initially but now it is stuck in an infinite reboot with a BSOD. Unfortunately it reboots so fast that I can't get the BSOD information. It will boot fine if I remove one stick of RAM and take it down to 2GB. Unfortunately I would like to keep the additional RAM since I have it installed. Out of frustration and curious to see if there was a hardware issue I installed a 64Bit version of Ubuntu and everything runs fine there. Within Ubuntu I am running XP in a VMWare virtual machine and do not have any issues with this. I have looked everywhere on the Internet for a solution and can't seem to find one. Please help. Thank you.

Did this just start happening? Or did it happen when you upgraded to 4 GB of RAM?

Can you run some memnory diags in your BIOS?

Is it always the same stick of RAM that you're removing? It could be that Windows is accessing a specific address on that one stick.

Can you try different combinations of RAM using 3 of the 4 sticks? (123, 234, 134, etc) --to see if a specific stick is defective?

It always had the 4 GB of RAM.

I tried swapping out sticks of RAM and it doesn't matter what the configuration is.

I tried running the diagnostics from the BIOS and it didn't return any errors.

I only have two memory sticks so removing one at a time is the only test that I can perform.

Can you boot to Windows in SAFE MODE with all 4 GB? Can you boot into Windows in regular mode with 2 GB and check the event logs?

I can't boot into safe mode either. I also tried booting off of the Vista DVD to attempt a repair and this does not work either.

Can you boot to safe or regular mode with ust 2 GB of RAM? If so, do so and check the event logs

I can boot into any mode using 2GB of RAM.

what changed since your quote...

do the memory test vista comes with (boot from dvd, choose memory test) and see whats reported

try boot again with 4gb ram, press f8 to get start menu, choose disable restart on error and come back with the stop message

Looking in the Event Viewer in System, or Administrative Events, for a "Source" called "BugCheck" might reveal the BSOD error number.

Does the Safe Mode option of disabling Automatic Restarts work, or the options via System Properties/ Startup and Recovery/ Settings/ Automatically Restart?

If not, can you video, or digitally photograph the BSOD?

How old is this machine is it still under any Warranty?

Thanks for the tip about F8. I missed that one. Now I can see the BSOD. The error that I am getting is
*** STOP: 0x0000007B (0x80699BB0,0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

Yes the system is still under warranty.

Error message when you try to install Windows Vista on a computer that includes a DELL CERC SATA 1.5/6ch RAID controller: "STOP 0x0000007B"

Error message when you start a Windows Vista-based computer after you change the SATA mode of the boot drive: "STOP 0x0000007B INACCESSABLE_BOOT_DEVICE"

Fact 1: It works with only 2GB of ram
Fact 2: It doesn't work with 4GB of ram
Fact 3: It's under warranty

Solution: Call your vendor, make them fix it. <Shrug>
