i was domnloading some sample music and a norton antivirus warning appeared on screen saying id picked up a virus, anyone got any links for free antivirus software to get rid of this virus(cant remember the virus name} or any ideas on how to solve my problem.sorry if i got the wrong part of the forum

Yep, you definately did get the wrong Forum...

but use GOOGLE and search for AVG or AntiVir, both are good AntiVirus programms which offer a free version...

but you mentioned Norton, as having caught the critter, what is up with that? if the version you have is not updateable then you will certainly need to DeInstall it first before you install another AntiVirus proggy...

Download the following aswell, they are Anti Spy- and Adware programms that will take care of quite a few pests themselves that AntiVirus will not touch...

AdAware from Lavasoft, SpyBot S&D, and Microsoft AntiSpyware programs...

good hunting...

I had to smile when i read this! it's priceless!

Quote: downloading music and Norton's antivirus warning appeared!!!

This means you have Norton's Antivirus software already installed so you don't need a free one.

Run a Norton's Antivirus scan
Delete or quarantine offending bug.

P.S don't be tempted to have more than one antivirus program installed on your PC at any one time!

A couple of notes:

1. If Norton detected it, it should probably be cleanable by Norton. Try that first.

2. If you don't actually have Norton installed, then it probably was not a true virus scan message. There are some advertisements that pop up fake virus detection messages to entice users to click on them, which usually installs some sort of spyware. Or else they claim that your PC is infected in an attempt to get them to buy their "antivirus" software, which really does nothing. It wouldn't suprise me if one of those tried to mascarade as Norton Antivirus since it is a well-known and legitimate product.
